The Mesoamerican Reef is the second-largest in the world after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. In a little over a year, the Mexican Caribbean has lost over 30 percent of its corals due to an illness called Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD). This sickness causes coral to calcify and die, putting the entire region at risk. It could potentially devastate the tourism industry dependent on the reef, and yet, it is highly possible that too much tourism is creating the problem in the first place. Ironically, if we are to protect the coral, we must first save the coral from ourselves.
THE GOOD NEWS
There are foundations working hard to help the Mesoamerican corals survive this disease, such as Beyond Coral – a foundation who is engaging technology, art, academic universities, coral farms and most importantly, locals to restore the reefs.
